Sign language linguistics - French Belgian Sign Language (LSFB) and Catalan Sign Language (LSC)

Introduction

I am a PhD student at the LSFB-Lab. I was awarded a grant (2013-2017) by the Belgian Fund for Scientific Research (F.R.S.-FNRS) in order to write my thesis on discourse markers.

My research is focused on the analysis of discourse of French Belgian Sign Language (LSFB) and Catalan Sign Language (LSC), in particular, I am studying the use of buoys and discourse markers. The first step in my project is to check the categories of buoys that can be found and create an inventory of discourse markers for both sign languages. The following step aims to cast light on the distribution of buoys and discourse markers across different productions, on their immediate context and on their use for discourse cohesion. The data will be extracted from two large-scale corpora, one for LSFB and another for LSC, and this will be the first study for both sign languages concerning such linguistic elements. The main benefits of this research are two: first, we will get to know how discourse is built in sign languages, and second, we will contribute to the perseveration of the linguistic diversity and minorities in Belgium and in Spain.

In addition to my PhD research, I have also worked for a year (2012 - 2013) in the LSFB Corpus project in which I still collaborate at the moment. Visit the Facebook website of the project for the latest news!

Introduction

I am a researcher at the LSFB-Lab.

My doctoral research focused on the analysis of discourse of French Belgian Sign Language (LSFB) and Catalan Sign Language (LSC). I investigated the use of buoys, PALM-UP and SAME. The analysis of these discourse markers revealed intra- and inter-linguistic differences and similarities at the level of their distribution per genre, per signer, their functions and their position in discourse. This study also shows that discourse markers have common properties in the two modalities (spoken and signed).

In addition to my PhD research, I have also worked for a year (2012 - 2013) in the LSFB Corpus project in which I still collaborate at the moment. Visit the Facebook website of the project for the latest news!
