    Abstract

The purpose of this work is to help the students of first year of university in computer science with their course of linear algebra. Among the possible obstacles for the understanding of linear algebra concepts, we focus our attention on the notion of linear independence. We tried to motivate the introduction of a very abstract definition while more concrete characterizations are given to the students. We then used this definition and these characterizations step by step in a proof and in examples, to allow the students a better understanding. Some slides were created to this aim, and were presented to the students during a lecture. Multiple choice question papers were also developed to detect misunderstanding and to test the impact of the whole device.
