MBE growth of MoTe2 and other 2D materials and characterization

Project: Research

Project Details

Description

After the tremendous interest in graphene, there has been a search for
other two-dimensional (2D) materials. MoTe2 is one of such materials; it
has unique properties that make it attractive for fundamental research but
also for applications. MoTe2 exists in several crystalline phases (2H, 1T,
1T') and one of the challenges is to produce films with a well defined phase
and to control transition between phases. We plan to use molecular beam
epitaxy to grow MoTe2, first on graphene on SiC(0001) and then directly on
Si(111).

Key findings

Molecular beam epitaxy (MBE), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), semiconducting phase, semi-metallic phase.
