: An analysis on the perceived differences between cosmetic - and pay-to-win microtransactions

Résumé

This master thesis contains an in depth analysis of the video game industry as a whole, in form of a BMC and a statistical analysis of an important aspect of this industry; microtransactions. In the BMC, we analyze the 9 main components of the video game industry as it is an academically rather neglected industry that has grown strongly in the last few years. Concerning the microtransactions, which have also grown strongly in the recent years and have been subject to some criticism, we concluded a t-test and a regression analysis to test some of our hypotheses. These hypotheses mainly focus on the difference in the perception of 2 of the most important types of microtransactions; Pay-to-Win and cosmetic microtransactions (PTWMTX & CMTX). We tested whether the purchase of a CMTX or PTWMTX would have an impact on several aspects such as the Perceived Enjoyment (PE), Perceived Playability (PP), Behavioral Intention to Use (BIU) and Perceived Ease of Use (PEU), etc. We found out that the purchase of a CMTX, on average, has a rather positive impact on the aforementioned variables whereas the purchase of PTWMTX negatively affects the variables in general. In the end, we suggested video game developers to emphasize their business models more on CMTX rather than PTWMTX.
