Résumé

In this paper Lieven Vandelanotte presents a corpus study exploring relative and absolute tenses in Indirect Speech and Thought. He finds that tenses in these constructions are fundamentally different from tenses in 'non-reported' complex clauses. He claims that the involvement of the deictic centre of the 'original speaker' should be recognized by adding a second Sayer/Cognizant time-line in Declerck's (1991) framework.
