Résumé

Three successive periods of the development of the channel bed and floodplain of the Belgian part of the Meuse River and their hydrological, physicochemical, and ecological consequences are examined. Changes have included a marked reduction in flow, a large increase in suspended material, a degree of eutrophication, and the disturbance of the original flora and fauna. The causes of the changes are considered.
