    Résumé

Research concerns an assessment of an emotion-based program (PEACE) for
kindergarten to promote safe relationships with dogs. We administered a one-day
program (drawings, stories, role play, activities with real dog), about recognition
of dogs and children expressing emotions and recognition of and response to
unsafe situations with dogs. Responses of 103 children aged 4.5-5 years were
collected 3 times (pre (T1), shortly post (T2) and 1 month later (T3)). After program
participation, children had shorter responses times about dogs and children
emotions recognition but only improved correct recognition of canine emotions.
They also had more correct responses when exposed to unsafe situations and
regarding their adjusted behaviors knowledge. No effect of parents’ opinion about
their children, presence of family dog, or children’ sex was observed. This original
program promotes safety interactions between dogs and children by stimulating
empathy and theory of mind to the latter
