The aim of this article is to propose a new interpretation of the concept of ‚translation error‘. Instead of reading the translation error as a key feature of understanding the target culture (that of the translator or that of his public), I will consider it a textual ‚constraint‘, i.e. a formal mechanism systematically imposed upon a text. As a ‚constraint‘, the error can be read as a key feature in a new understanding of the source text and as an opportunity to the creation of new target texts. Although my examples are all literary, the mechanism described in this article has a more general scope.
