Simples rules to explain the complex beauty of fractals

Activité: Discours ou présentation Discours invité

Description

Fractals are around us. They are everywhere (in Nature, but also in economics, in medicine, in space and in time). Since several centuries, researchers struggled to fit such “strange shapes” in a theory made of circles, triangles and squares capables to explaining their existence in Nature. With the exception of few mathematicians (Peano and Poincaré) such bizarre shapes were considered as isolated monsters in the beauty of the Nature and only in the mid of the XX century Mandelbrot proposed a mathematical framework to describe the fractals, where quantitative measures were possible grounded on a solid theory.
Despite their complexity and their association with chaos, fractals can be explained using simple rules: scaling, duplication and translation. During this talk we will make a journey in the zoo of (mathematical) fractals, we will learn how to construct them, how to measure them and eventually try to understand why they are so widespread.
