Abstract

The purpose of this master thesis is to explore the possibility to use a honeypot as an intrusion detection system. We will first define the context and what honeypots and intrusion detection (and prevention) systems are. Then we will focus on the threats that honeypots can possibly detect, explore their different phases and discuss if and how a honeypot can be employed to address each of them. Finally, we will expose the results of a set of experiments on honeypot implementations, and present application scenarios in two organizations network, one fictive and one real.
