This study examines the trend, factors, and consequences of polygamy in Cameroon. Using data from multiple surveys conducted between 1991 and 2018, we analyze the prevalence of polygamous marriages among both women and men, and investigate the factors that influence polygamy, such as educational level, religious affiliation, residence, and age. Additionally, we explore the consequences of polygamy on various outcomes, including stability of marriage, fertility, and child mortality. Our findings suggest a decrease in polygamy over time, with certain factors, such as educational level and religious affiliation, playing a significant role. The consequences of polygamy vary, with implications for marital stability and child well-being. This study contributes to the existing literature on polygamy and highlights the need for further research on the dynamics and impact of non-traditional marital unions.
