    Abstract

In this thesis, the stability of a strongly interacting binary asteroid system is considered. We develop motion equations, energy and angular momentum in order to discuss the transfer of energy and angular momentum between rotational and translational motion while conserving the total system energy and angular momentum. Using these conservations, we can develop a set of sufficient conditions for the stability of the system. These conditions allow us to define several classes of binary asteroids and bring out their characteristics. Nevertheless, we are able to determine the effects of energy dissipation and show when it is possible to have a stable system without escapes and impacts. Many computation examples are given in order to illustrate some of our discoveries. This study has been set from a series of Scheeres'articles published in Celestial Mechanics and Dynamical Astronomy between 1999 and 2002.
