Abstract

Business Intelligence (BI) is an umbrella term defining the use of data in a goal to allow fact-based decision making. The extent to which BI is applied within organizations widely varies. In this mater’s thesis, I want to assess the level of BI adoption among small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Belgium. For that purpose, I interviewed five SMEs from different sectors to understand their practices regarding data management and analysis with a particular focus on how data is used in decision-making processes. Different frameworks for the assessment of BI adoption have been described in the literature. After having motivated the selection of one of those as well as adjustments made to better fit the context of SMEs, I apply the framework to the interviewed companies and discuss the results.
