Abstract
Horse behaviour is shaped by the fact that they were preyed upon and that they needed to be able to escape predators. Horses can sleep in the standing position and if phases of recumbency occur they are usually short-lived. Prolonged recumbency should be considered a warning sign. The different types of recumbency and their consequences must be understood in order to manage prolonged decubitus, which is pathological. Identifying and understanding the states of calm, agitation and unconsciousness, all play a role in the management of the problem. The different concepts are described in this paper as well as the techniques to move, roll-over and make the horse stand-up when it is in the decubitus position.
