Abstract
In a context where failure at the start of higher education remains a major concern in many countries, many researchers are interested in whether young people have been properly guided at the start of this pathway. This study investigates the factors perceived by students as having been of real significance in their orientation process when they were at the end of secondary education. By comparing interviews conducted with 26 students and 25 stakeholders from their home lycées, we have highlighted the major role played by teachers, although they are not always aware of it, in supporting pupils’ choice of orientation. The findings suggest that teachers should be made more aware of the influence they have on their pupils in this area, and that the schemes set up in secondary schools to support their orientation’s choice should be institutionalised and coordinated.
