Abstract

This essay takes its cue from a phrase that is as polemical as it is ambiguous, “tout autre est tout autre” (every other is wholly other), put forward by Derrida in opposition to Levinas’s “absolutization” of the Other (l’Autre). In so doing, the essay seeks to demonstrate that Derrida embarked on a diversification of “otherness”. Applied to questions of “difference” (animality, sex, foreignness) and their “différance”, the
essay thus orients the ethics of responsibility towards politics, rather than towards metaphysics and religion.
