    Abstract

The present invention is related to a target (1) for producing neutrons from a 20 mA, 1.9 to 3 MeV proton beam, the target comprising a thin layer (16) of lithium arranged inclined with reference to the incident proton beam. The lithium layer is provided on a backing (15) made of a material having as one of its main constituents an element chosen out of the group comprising Fe, Ta and V. The target is preferably comprised of two panels arranged at an angle with respect to each other. The backing preferably comprises cooling means. The beam shaping assembly for the target preferably comprises a moderator made of magnesium fluoride.
