Abstract

This article presents the first systematic study of the influence exerted on Avellaneda's Quixote by both the Tragicomedia de Calisto y Melibea attributed to Fernando de Rojas «y antiguo autor» and the celestinesque subgenre itself, from an hypertextual and an architextual perspective. After making an inventory of celestinesque characters who populate the pages of the apocrypha, this work examines in particular the character of Bárbara –little studied by Avellanédian critics–, through whom the three types of mediation (diabolic, carnal and social) exercised by the celestinesque prototype crystallise. We analyse the prosopography of the character, his erotic and satirical components and his theatrical function. With her construction based on the celestinesque imaginary of the Golden Age, Bárbara participates to a large extent in Avellaneda's poetics of rewriting, axiologically anchored in reprobatio.
