Abstract
If the problem of age in the work place is at the heart of political debates today, scientific research on social stereotypes regarding older workers goes back much further. T he first surveys, which were American, date back to the fifties. Numerous studies have endeavoured to show the presence and the strength of prejudice towards an ageing working population ever since. The article strives to present and synthesise the main surveys conducted over the past fifty years and to show how the period in which they were carried out influenced their conception.
