The origins of bureaucracy. The spread of literacy and its consequences for the evolution of princely government in the "Southern Low Countries" and Northern France, 12th-14th centuries.

The main issue is the impact of the late-12th century transformations of literacy on the exercise of traditional princely power : this project will put into light how territorial princes adapted their habits of ruling to exploit the opportunities offered by the written word.
