Many failures of first-year students seem to be due to too poor a mastery of the language, as far as the receptive AND productive skills are concerned. So as to solve these deficiencies research has tried to highlight the deeper problems (such as, for instance, cognitive operations) that are underlying and are not sheerly linked with language skills.
